Congratulations Liz Ballare again!!!

Congratulations once again to my grad student Elizabeth Ballare, a Fulbright Scholar, for receiving a grant from the Riverbanks Conservation Support Fund (CSF) for her project titled “Health effects of rehabilitation and release in Indonesian orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii)”. Liz has been in Indonesia for over a year working closely with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation in Nyaru menteng and Batikap release site. Very proud of her efforts! This is Liz’s second grant from a zoo in the US.

Meet Baby Merkur!

We are excited to welcome another healthy infant to the Tuanan population named Merkur. Merkur is Milo’s first offspring. Mindy gave birth to Milo right when we started conducting research at Tuanan in 2003 and now she is a mother. It is wonderful to have a full cycle and see this matriline grow. Mindy is a grandmother with an infant of her own (Moby). This also means that Milo was pregnant during the fires and successfully had a baby – good news!

Orangutans: Lethal aggression between females

orangutan article

A great article just out by Anna Marzec and Tuanan Orangutan Research Center researchers, including Dr Erin Vogel and two of her graduate students (Alysse Moldawer and Shauhin Alavi). Lethal aggression between female orangutans? Male-female coalitions? Check this out!
